Thrift Shopping on eBay

scallopdress

I know, right? What a crazy concept to shop for clothes on eBay. At least for me this is something NEW!

{ TBH } - To Be Honest (My students just told me what this means so now in my fight to stay young and relevant I will use the term at every opportunity.

Continuing on… TBH I have used eBay as a search engine to compare prices but until January I hadn't ever bought anything. I love, love, love craigslist for around the house steals and deals but again I've never bought clothing from anyone off the site.

Last week I got on a Pinterest run... you know... where you spend countless amounts of time pinning and oogling over shoes, outfits, DIY projects and before you know it you haven't eaten dinner and it's bed time. I was in the mood to start looking at what is trending for spring fashion and came across a lovely J. Crew Scalloped cut dress that I HAD to have. I have never invested in the "perfect little black dress" and so I thought this would be a great piece to add to my wardrobe. Only problem is... J.Crew retails the dress for $168.00. YIKES!

Really though, how adorable is this dress!

After catching my breathe when I saw the price I decided to look elsewhere. This is where I got the idea to search on eBay for the dress and see if I could get a great deal. Sure enough, there were so many to choose from!

I learned so much about eBay. You can filter and search for length, in my case Petite. You can filter for size, color, new, used, and price range.

$74.95 is still a little pricey for me but again... I wanted a black dress that could be worn for multiple purposes. Dress up for a night out or to work with a cute jean jacket and flats.
I went for it and am delighted by my choice!

The dress fits my body type perfectly! I usually have a good eye for matching clothing shape with my body type. I’m also very happy that I got this in petite since many times if I try on a regular the darts don’t match up, the armpit areas are much too loose, and the length is always a bit too long for what it’s supposed to be.

I realize that $74.00 is not the most thrifty purchase out there, however, I was able to score a great lightly used dress for $98.00 less then if I would've found it on the rack.

In March I head to Washington, DC for a Leadership Conference and my first opportunity to March on Capital Hill! That’s right, rubbing some elbows with the big guys.
I can’t wait to pair this with a black blazer (to cover up some skin), nude heels, and some light statement jewelry!

Have you ever purchased clothing off of eBay or Craigslist? What was your experience like?

  2. I've never bought anything on eBay, but I'll give it a shot! I can see it being a really good way to find some of those pricier staple pieces you're looking for. Glad to hear that the dress fit you well! I always have to get petite clothes, so I'll try filtering my search and see what I find. Thanks for the tip!

  3. Love your dress! I've been searching for deals on maternity clothes on ebay recently and found that if you're doing the whole bidding thing it's hard to keep up with! But if the "buy it now" option is a good price then I think it's great!
