Writing it down…

Today marks 6 months to the day when we found out we were miscarrying. I was 10 weeks and 3 days along and this was not a life event that anyone every plans on happening let alone is ready to deal with. This morning I shared this photo I found on my Instagram account.

image

I wish I were brave enough to post it on my Facebook account but I’m trying to respect the privacy that my husband needs. With that said, how can I post this here? Isn’t this a very public space?

The answer is yes, this is VERY public but the way I see it is Facebook post are more advertisements. Post are either seriously stupid accounts of what you ate, did, accomplished. And lets be honest, no one wants to see an advertisement about Miscarriages.

My blog is, in its own way, a journal. Its my own account of where I’ve been, what I’ve accomplished, and how I’ve felt about things in my life. The people who come by to read are those of you I’ve connected with over the years or you are friends and family that are already aware of much of my life. I’m not posting this to advertise, I’m simply writing it down for the sake of my own sanity.

Where I am at mentally 6 months after a miscarriage?

Well, I’ll say one thing when we started trying again 3 months ago I felt ecstatic, hopeful, renewed. It was going to be a new start and of course it was going to happen right away.

Wrong.

We are on month 3. My husband feels defeated. Every day that passes I start to feel defeated too. No one really asks me about how I am doing, besides my best friend. It’s like the big elephant in my life now. I know that my family probably wants to ask me but they don’t know how. Probably out of fear that they think it will hurt me if they bring it up. I spoke with my mom about some of my feelings this past weekend. About wishing we could be pregnant already and how frustrated we are with the process.

It is literally the most frustrating thing. Growing up we are taught in sex-ed how “easy it is to get pregnant”. Ha. They left out a few key factors though. Females are only fertile for 24-36 hours after their egg is released. In one month there are 720 hours/30 days, and you only have 24 hours in the time period to get it done. The other thing, yes, you can some what predict that it will happen on day 14 of that cycle but it doesn’t always happen on that day. And its not something you can see. You can pee on sticks and take your temperature but it’s still not 100%.

So frustrating. And BTW this process will suck any romance that you are trying to have in your marriage right out of the window.

I am told all of the time about how strong I am as a person. How brave I was to move away from family and friends. How well I have adjusted to my new life. I know I am strong, but dammit, sometimes I don’t want to be.

Life is just not fair, Why am I a chosen one? Why are any of us going through this chosen to experience life in this way?  I ask God this a lot. I pray that I will understand the life he has given me. I pray that soon I will have his answer. I pray to continue to be strong. To be patient. To be kind to all of those that I see are pregnant or are announcing their pregnancy's. To be content with the life I have. To be strong for my husband. To be so many things.

I try not to think that in 4 months it will be an entire year that has gone by since we first found out we were pregnant. An entire year.

Time is so precious to me now. We can’t slow it down or rewind it.

Through all of this, there are the good days and the bad. This is just a bad one. I know there will be better days to come.

Thanks for reading. I wish this post were more inspiring. I hope someday it is.

Hope, Love, and Healing after a Miscarriage

Hello 2015.

#TheTruthIs

Over the past year I have noticed a small green monster that lives amongst me. He shows up when scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. He speaks to me… telling me that life is unfair and that the people in these photos are underserving of the happiness they depict in their photos. He is a nasty little bugger that makes me think and say things that I would never want people to say about me. He taunts me and tells me that I will never have what they have.

I hope I’m not alone in this.

You Have Time

Recently I bought a book for a friend and myself to read called, "The Best Yes" by author Lysa TerKeurst. I heard her preach in a podcast that I listen to and thought she did a great job of conveying God's word through every day life experiences/difficulties as a woman. I then was speaking with my friend about life situations we were going through and thought Lysa's book definitely spoke to us both as we are trying to navigate through marriage, life, family, and faith.

"The Best Yes" is a book that helps women realize the weight of their decisions and how we often forget that it's OKAY to say no to many things so that later you can say YES to the things that need your time the most. I am the worst person at saying No. Part of my personality is that I want to please people and sometimes take it so far that I forget that I am saying Yes for that person and not for myself. It's not a bad thing, being there for people and helping is a wonderful trait to have until you become so overwhelmed that you can no longer function as a normal person.

In the first Chapter Lysa speaks about time. There are 168 hours a week and 24 hours in a day that we devote to family, work, church, friends, chores, hobbies, etc. Then there is that list of "Wants" that we never quite get around to. You know... our list, New Years resolutions, things we want to accomplish.

My List:

Go running 3-5 times a week
Travel to Hawaii & Europe
Go to see P!nk in Concert
Make new friends
Go on a Mission Trip
Coach my future child's soccer team

These are all things on my list that may happen over the spand of my life but many of those things on my list could happen now and I simply choose to waste my time filling it with other crap. To really see where my time was going I took Lysa's "You Have Time" Quiz.

http://thebestyes.com/time-assessment-tool

Here are my results:

My weeks mainly consist of Work and Sleeping.
Work = 40 hrs per week on average
Sleep= 8 hrs a day x 7 = 56 hrs

72.3% or 96 hrs a week goes towards two things that I have to do. I need sleep and I need to work for money.

Where does the other left over time go? Eating, Church, Family, Errands, Personal Hygiene, and "other".

As you can see in the bar graph on most all days I only use around 20.25 hours out of a 24 hour day. Which amounts to 141.75 hours a week out of a total of 168 hours.

I waste 3.75 hours every day.
Which leads to 26.25 hours a week.
Which is around 116 hours a month.
And 1,376.75 hours a year!

Where does it go? I know exactly where it goes.

TV time. Social Media. Here Blogging. But really if I'm being honest... mainly TV.

Does TV fulfill me? No, but I enjoy it.

Monday: Big Bang Theory
Tuesday: Intervention
Wednesday: Stalker
Thursday: Project Runway
Friday: Whatever chick flick is on

But... LBH here. (Let's Be Honest)

These TV shows that I enjoy watching or that I look forward to are 30 minutes to 1 hour long. I could still manage to accomplish watching them and still have time left over for other things. The rest of my time goes to TV that I don't even enjoy or look forward to seeing, it's just on and I'm tired so I watch.

I've realized with this exercise that "I Have Time".

I can plan better meals to eat at home to make cooking fun again. I can absolutely use that time to work out a few days a week. I can plan more house projects that I will actually put aside the time to do. That sewing machine I have can get dusted off.

I am excited to continuing reading along so that I may grow and become better at saying No to the things that aren't My Best Yes.

I encourage you to take the less than 5 minute Time assessment Tool over at TheBestYes.com to see how much time you have to devote to the things you would like to get out of life.

http://thebestyes.com/time-assessment-tool

I would love to hear your results and maybe some of the things you would like to accomplish with the "extra" time that you have left over during the days/weeks.

When Life Gives You Lemons – Part III

You can read Part One and Part Two here.

(The following post involves some graphic topics)

The next day I woke up feeling as if I was getting “period cramps”. It was Tuesday and I had already decided to take off the entire week of work to deal with all the emotions I would be feeling along with not truly knowing when the full blown miscarriage would happen. All I knew was the Doctor said there would be a lot of blood, more than what a period would be. At this point I just felt like I was experiencing a regular period. How long would this go on for until “it happened”? Would this be days of changing pads or would this happen tomorrow? The unknown was starting to make myself second guess my decision to carry this on at home. I also live 13 hours from my family and close friends, my husband had to go to work, and I was alone…. so alone.

I called home (Delaware) to my mom and talked to her about how I wasn’t sure if I had made the right decision. She affirmed with me that it was okay to go through the procedure and at least that way this would be behind us and I could begin to heal, rather then the constant waiting game I was in. So I did just that. I called OB and they scheduled a D&C procedure for me at 1pm on Wednesday. After I made the decision I felt a weight lifted, this would all be over tomorrow. There was also that other cloud hanging over me of what was going on in my right fallopian tube. During the procedure that would also check on what was so fuzzy on the ultrasound. It was the right decision.

I went about the day sitting on the couch sobbing. I just couldn’t believe I was actually going through this. My superwoman cape was striped from my spine, I do not have superpowers, I can be broken, I am no longer invisible. Hours passed on and my cramps increasingly got worse. {G} was awesome, he called around 5 to say he would pick up pizza for dinner so I didn’t have to worry about cooking. He got home around 6pm and I was thrilled to have him there with me to hug and talk to. He was strong through this all but I could tell he was also broken too.

Around 7pm I went to the bathroom and realized what the doctor meant by “more than a period”. I was horrified to see the pool of red beneath me and I realized in that moment that I wasn’t going to make it to 1pm tomorrow. I told {G} to watch the clock. If I am still bleeding this bad in an hour we need to head to the emergency room. Now my cramps seemed to come every 6 minutes… where these contractions? They hurt more than any cramp I had every experienced and with every cycle of them I would end up in the bathroom with another bowl filled.

After about 6 times I started to feel “off”. Something was wrong. I walked into the living room where {G} was sitting on the couch and I said to him, “We need to leave for the ER right now, something is wrong, I just don’t feel right.” He got up and went immediately to the truck. I went to the bathroom one last time and by the time I walked to the kitchen I felt like I was going to faint so I laid on the kitchen floor. The floor felt nice and cold, I could feel it instantly relieve the hot flash that accompanied the fainting feeling. I knew {G} was waiting and thought to myself, this is going to get worse, get up and get in the truck. And so I did.

We live 20 minutes from the nearest hospital and there was no way we would make it to Ames (40 minutes) to the hospital I had been seeking pre-natal care through. Our house is located on a gravel room about a third from the paved road. I remembered pulling out of the drive way and all of the sudden I felt so tired and shut my eyes. The next thing I realize is that I am in a dream and I hear {G} yelling for me to wake up, and so I do. I awaken to see that we are sitting at the stop sign at the end of our gravel road. I had passed out and {G} was now scared shitless.

I told him to keep driving and that I would stay awake. I fought so hard to stay awake. I focused on a sticker on the lining of the roof of the truck, reading it over and over to myself. {G} kept holding my hand saying its okay, we’re almost there. 10 minutes into the ride I felt nauseated to the point that I knew I would be sick. We grabbed a box in the backseat and dumped out everything in it. A moment later I had thrown up everything in me. Poor box. Poor truck. Poor G.

After I vomited I felt a little more alert and aware of my surroundings. By now we were on the outskirts of the town with the hospital and I could tell we were well above the speed limit. A little after 8pm we pulled into the ER and {G} ran in to tell them what was happening. They brought me a wheelchair and took me to a small examination room in the ER. By now my cramps were every three minutes and they hurt like hell. They asked me to go to the bathroom and pull their cover on and give them a urine sample. I was so confused and embarrassed when I handed them the cup of red. Is that what you wanted? The nurse took some blood and then started an IV which didn’t go over well. They tried both arms and still couldn’t get a vein mean while my insides were ripping apart. After what felt like forever they got the IV in and placed me in an ER room with a curtain that separated us from whoever else would be coming in that night.

Time lapsed on and {G} and I were left speechless. Here I was laying in a bed with a “Pad” under me, bleeding so pad I could feel it soaking through my gown, and feeling the kind of pain that took my breath away and no one would tell us what was next. When we asked all they would say is, We are waiting for your test.” My test? What will that prove? The proof is here in this bed. Such confusion! Such pain. Such humiliation every time a nurse came in and lifted my gown to check my progression. This went on for almost an hour when I was in such pain that {G} ran into the hallway yelling to them that his wife was in pain and would someone do something to help me. It was then that they gave me morphine.

Oh morphine. It was magical. I could tell I was still bleeding lots of fluid but and that the cramps were there pushing and pulling but there was no longer any physical pain.

Sometime around 9:30pm the ER Doctor came in and told us the OB on call was on the phone with my OB in Ames. They were discussing all that had happened up until that point and she would be down shortly.

When she arrived it was like an angel has arrived. She said how sorry she was that I was going through this and that she would take care of me. She asked if I knew that I had a UTI. I was shocked. How would I know? Aren’t pregnant woman supposed to pee every 5 minutes? She then asked if she could examine me inside of just going in for it. And from her reaction I could tell how upset she was that the ER nurses had just left me there to bleed and never once changed out the pad underneath of me. “Brittany, I can tell that you have passed something and I am going to remove it by hand and then we are going to clean you up and get you up to my nurses that can take much better care of you.” She removed what was the amniotic sack and the placenta and examined it on the other side of the curtain. As the other doctor had said, there was no fetus.

She told the ER staff that she wanted me cleaned up and sent up to the birthing wing right away, but not before telling me that there was a newborn on the floor and asking if I would be okay with hearing the little guy through out the night. Just her asking me made is all okay. By this time it was 11pm and I was physically and emotionally drained. I just want to go to sleep.

As I lay in bed throughout the night the nurse came in to check vitals and my bleeding, she also helped me to the restroom when needed. I sent {G} home to sleep in our bed instead of in the recliner next to the bed. Winston would need to be let out in the morning and we weren’t sure how long we would be at the hospital so I’d rather him gone while I was asleep and there for me when I awoke from this nightmare.

I thought it would be hard to be in the birthing wing… heck I was in a birthing room. Photos of smiling babies around me and quotes on the walls about family. I was numb. I felt nothing.

The doctor came in to speak with us about after care. I had a pretty bad UTI that I needed to take a prescription for, I had lost a lot of blood so I needed to take an Iron supplement, the bleeding would continue to occur but should be like a period that could continue for weeks, and I would need to come in weekly for a labs to make sure my HcG levels were going back to zero. She had also asked at this point if I would like to continue my follow up with her or with the doctor in Ames? If I got anything from this I had found a doctor who I trusted and that I felt actually cared about my emotional health just has much as my physical. I was sticking with her.

When I got home on Wednesday I called my parents and told them about our night. It was easier than I thought to talk about it.

At this point in all of this I had gone through a few stages of loss:

  1. Denial – This isn’t really happening.
  2. Anger – Why Us?
  3. Bargaining – If I would’ve done this then we wouldn’t be where we are now.

I was all dried up and not a tear dropped that day. I was numb.

*I will be sharing my final post about this experience soon. In all of the post its what I want people to read the most. It’s focused around the emotional state that I (and many others) have gone through once the “physical miscarriage” is over and our lives continue.

When Life Gives You Lemons: Part II

{Click here for PART ONE}

August 4th:

As we entered the Ultrasound room the first thing I saw was the large monitor facing the table, then another facing where the technician would be sitting. She was kind to ask us if we would rather not watch from the large monitor.

Thought #1. If my baby is fine this will be our first time seeing them.

Thought #2. If there is something wrong I am going to have to deal with it no matter what.

We decided to watch and right away I knew.

In the “bubble” that would house my baby was nothing. No heart beat… not even a fetus. I looked at {G} as this was happening and held back the tears. The other reason I knew was because there was complete silence. Not a word from the technician and I didn’t have the courage to ask what was obviously staring back at us on the screen. It seemed like eternity. She took photos of the “bubble” and then continued onto each fallopian tube taking even more time with the right side.

When she continued onward I finally broke the silence. “Is there something else wrong that you are looking at?”

“It seems that there is something here on your right side but I’m just not sure, so I’m taking lots of shots of it so that the Doctor can make a judgment.”

When she was done, the lights came on, and she left the room so that I could dress.

As we waited I looked at {G} again and said, “You know there is nothing there.”

When Life Gives You Lemons

When life gives you lemons… I turned to God.

I’ve been thinking about writing this post since August 6th, 2014 and haven’t been ready. I still am not ready to share this event that has happened in my life but something in me keeps saying to get this out. My husband and I have shared it with close family and some friends but it’s still very much a secret. If you are family and friends and you have somehow ventured into reading this post and are thinking… holy shit what is going on? Please know that it’s not personal… well it’s personal to us and we just weren’t ready for it to be personal to you.

After much reflection I've decided to tell my story of loss because I know there is someone who needs to read this, who may be going through the same thing, and I am so grateful to have had some other ladies share their stories that I needed at a time when I felt so so alone. There are too many brave woman holding it in, I'd like to let it out.

Here I am on August 3rd, 2014.
10weeks

I am 10 weeks 3 days pregnant and am taking my first pregnancy photos to share with all of you in our amazing and exciting news. I’ve been stock piling pregnancy post to share later after we have made our announcement. So many post about how we found out, how I was feeling week to week, and thoughts and feelings about how I’ve been praying for this moment for almost two years. 10 weeks of reading the development of my baby, starting as a poppy seed... now a prune.

We hadn’t started trying for a family until late this spring so this wasn't the case of infertility. G just wasn’t ready… until now. We are both ready. When we found out in May I was over the moon. Of course I immediately started creating “secret” Pinterest Boards for a nursery, pregnancy photos, baby photos, pregnancy to do.. not to do’s, and so on. My life was moving on as planned and both {G} and I could not wait to share the news with those we loved. We had decided that we would wait until after the first trimester to create an announcement and were busy planning corky photos that would shout to the world, “We are starting our own family”. We had also already picked out names, something we thought we would struggle through but were now very clear on as a couple.

Affirmation

Response and Resoning

G and I have been attending church for the past 4 weeks now and each Sunday I walk away feeling prepared to deal with life knowing that God has a plan and that we do not suffer alone.

Much like everyone else in this world we have better days then others. This morning was not a great one for me. It’s not that I was running late, I was 10 minute early. I didn’t struggle like usual to pick out an outfit, the first I put on worked. And well, my hair looks fan-freakin-tastic for the rainy day it turned into.

The thing is some days I get tired of baby news. Today in the news Kate Middleton is expecting her second child. I’m just at a place where I don’t want to hear about another person expecting a baby, whether I know you or if you live all the way across the big blue ocean. Sometimes my heart just isn’t big enough to merge your happiness with the contentment I have to feel right now. I need time to take it in. Time to pray. And understanding for those around me that I’m happy for you but just not with you right at this time.

My Faith Story

Last week my husband and I sat with our new pastor during a meeting to discuss us joining the local Church. Honestly, we haven't been to church in two years until three Sundays ago.

When we first moved to Iowa we decided it would be a great place to meet the people in our community but something didn't click. We stopped going, making excuses that we had chores to do around our 14 acre home and that going to church would take too much time out of the day. As we sat there in our meeting I was nervously awaiting the questions that would be brought forth. I've never had a relationship with a pastor. Heck, I've never really had a conversation with a pastor before other then, Hi & how are you?

Before our meeting I had began preparing mentally for the questions that may be asked. I knew deep within he would be asking us about our faith and how we were raised. Why wouldn't you ask that as a pastor? The problem is, that's a really confusing question for me to answer.

It was almost immediate but certainly not the first thing the Pastor asked. The first was, “Why do you want to join the church?”

Inside we weren't ready to share with this man why we were truly there, that was to seek Gods love and understanding of life. Instead, the other truth. We want to be true Christians. We have been lazy in our faith and know in our hearts that we should serve our church and commit our love to Jesus as he committed to us all.

Then came the second, the question I had prepared myself for. What is your faith story?

Thankfully, my husband had been Mr. Chatty Kathy since we walked through the doors and volunteered his story first. He amazes me in his sureness and confidence. How he delivers his accounts and speaks without hesitation. Looking back I think he knew it would be harder for me to explain so instead he was paving the road for my own, plugging in bits about his wife as he spoke.

Then it was my turn.

You see, (just say it) I'm not yet baptized. My father is Catholic, my mother Episcopalian. They decided not to baptize any of their four children, to this day I'm not sure why. My dad is still a devoted Catholic so we went to church some Sundays with him, mainly during the holidays. We always sat in the back and left before Communion took place. I later learned that it was because we weren't allowed to participate and no longer could my father. I lived in a very Catholic community in which I would go to school and kids would say that I was going to go to hell. I grew angry with religion and became atheist in high school. Later in college I met new friends that had found God along their own journeys. They started taking me to youth groups and helping me to understand all the questions that I never was able to ask anyone.

It was there that I found religion but it was much later when I found Faith.

I would marry and move to South Dakota away from friends, family, and everything I knew. I wouldn't find my "Dream Job" continuing as an Agriculture Teacher, instead I would land an admissions job at a Methodist College of merely 800 students. That's where I learned that being a Christian comes in all forms, beliefs, and traditions. It's where I learned to let go of my discomfort with religion and let God become more present in my life. It was the first time that I had heard that any believer of god could take communion. It took months for me to hear that it was okay to participate in communion, I still felt like it was wrong. I still felt like I should leave. But then one day I reached deep within and felt his love in my heart.  It was then that I found faith and for the first time I didn't feel judged for something that I knew in my heart has always been.

We would later move to Iowa where I would again move jobs and find myself searching for something more in my life. I missed my students, I missed guiding them, and being active in their lives. I found a job listing working with low income first generation students and as I read the description I realized that it was my calling. I got the job and more than ever I believe that my faith journey has lead me here to Iowa to work with these families and live exactly in the life that god had planned for me all along. During all of those years of confusion and questioning God was still doing his work through me. How amazing is he?

As we finished our conversation our Pastor asked if being baptized was something that I wanted for myself. I felt the tears starting to come to my eyes and responded.

"Absolutely, I've wanted this for a long time."

*As I finish up this post I want readers to know that I respect all religions. This was a journey through my eyes and part of that journey includes living as my father's daughter and experiencing going to a Catholic Church as a non-Catholic. I respect, love, and look up to him for continuing in his faith. I believe my parents wanted us to find our religion on our own and although confusing, I am exactly where I am suppose to be in Life, in Faith, and with God.
