Paging Dr. Grey

I have a little confession.

MjAxNC00NjYzNTM2MzMyNTQ0NWQ1

The year is 2015 and I am ashamed to say that until Tuesday evening I had NEVER watched a single episode.

This is ten years after the first episode aired.

I remember when it first premiered. I was a freshman in college and EVERYONE on my dorm floor was talking about it. They would get into their comfy sweats, grab their pillows and blankets, and commune in whomever’s room that was chosen to host that week. The entire next day was filled with gossip about what had happened in the show the night before and how incredibly hot “McDreamy” was.

Fast forward to a few years back. I was visiting family in Delaware and while at my parents house when one night I came home so find my younger sisters, mother, and father cozied up in the family room watching Grey’s.

“Dad, you seriously watch this show?”

“Yeah, it’s about sex, drama, and medicine. How could you not.”

I rolled my eyes and went upstairs.

Truth is.

It’s not that I wasn’t invited to watch the show with all my college friends, I just didn’t want to. I didn’t want to “like” the show that EVERYONE liked. Nor did I want to be a silly girl talking about how incredibly cute the head surgeon was on the show. My allegiance was to the show E.R. and that was that. No other medical series would compete.

Until now that is.

I recently was able to catch up on the series “Parenthood”. I was a season and a half behind and refused to watch it on TV because I had missed too much. While I was sick last week I grabbed my box of tissues, my blanket, and turned on Netflix. It was incredible, I cried a lot, and I’m so sad it’s over in a happy way.

Scrolling through the direct tv on Tuesday night I was bored. Nothing to watch on 356 channels. And my husband was gone on another work trip.

I decided to try and give the series “Breaking Bad” a shot. I watched 4 episodes and as interestingly creepy as it is I decided I just didn’t like it. I didn’t like the characters, the drugs, the story line and so it didn’t make the cut.

As I went back to the home screen on Netflix I saw that they had selected “Grey’s Anatomy” as a suggested show I would like.

::: Alright, I give. I’ll watch the very first episode and if I hate it then I’ll watch something else. :::

These should’ve been my last words…

I’m hooked.

I love how the storyline starts at the beginning shadowing the first 48 hours of 5 surgical interns. You get to know each of the characters and laugh right along with them as they try to figure out how to survive as the grunts of the hospital.

As season one (yes, I’ve watched all of season one already) goes on you see romance and friendships blossom, drama, and some pretty neat storylines of patients that come and go.

Here are some of my thoughts on the show so far:

Dr. Grey looks way too thin. It bothers me and I constantly catch myself wanting her to eat a burger instead of ingesting alcohol and coffee (much of what we see her consume on the show).

I also think she is quite whinny. Her voice is not my fav. and as the main character I thought I would like her much more. All the boys swoon over her and I don’t see the appeal. Maybe she will grow on me as the storyline goes on? We’ll see.

I’ve come to realize I don’t like the show because of the main character. I love the show because of all of the other characters. They are what make the show so great and keep me coming back for my Fix.

Dr. George O’Malley- innocent puppy faced guy that always gets the “guy that is your friend instead of boyfriend vibe” Poor dude.

Dr. Christina Yang- She is awkwardly smart, funny, and I love that in the show her layers get pulled back one episode at a time revealing another corky part about her life and personality.

The Nazi- Dr. Bailey – The surgical resident that is in charge of all of the interns. She is short, always in a bad mood, and badass. I love how she doesn’t take crap from ANYONE, including the men in the show.

Dr. Izzy Stevens- Oh Katherine Heigl. The girl from the trailer park who grew up to work her way through medical school by modeling to the girl who has become the leading intern in surgical pediatrics.

Dr. Sheppard – “McDreamy” I love Patrick Dempsey and he totally makes the show but I don’t like how indecisive he is. Please make up your mind. He does choose his marriage over his new girlfriend, so I can’t hate that.

There are others that are equally as great and I can’t wait to see them as they come and go throughout the next 11 seasons!

ELEVEN!

I seriously need to make some rules or else I will become yet another victim of Netflix binging.

Are you a Grey’s fanatic?

Please… no spoilers please. I just started season 2.

  1. I secretly hate myself for going on Pinterest to find a photo to use for this post... I glanced at a spoiler I did not want to see. My heart is crushed so for now I will fake pretend I didn't see it, tell myself it was a lie, and try not to break out the Ben and Jerry's later tonight. I'm anxious to see what lies ahead... I'm sure I know what you mean by "ALL" of the feelings and I can't wait to experience them!

  2. If you are already this bad with season 1 I cannot wait to see your reactions as you continue...I haven't missed an episode and Joe and I are glued to the TV every Thursday...he joined the party about 3 years ago after making fun of me for 3 years prior to that, but he too quickly caught up and can't miss it.

  3. Jess, I'm in trouble! I figured if the series has gone on this long that it must still be filled with all sorts of juiciness! I'm glad to hear that Joe likes the show, soon too George will have to endure my new obsession. :)
