Sir Winston

He Stole My Heart From HELLO...

I knew that someday I would have a pup of my own I just didn't realize that the love I would have for him would be this strong. In 2010 I was preparing for my wedding in August and trying to wrap my head around leaving my job, friends, and family to move to South Dakota to be with my soon to be husband.

{G} and I had talked for months about how we should get a dog of our own. He had wanted a dog of his own for years but traveled too much for work to take care of one. We figured once we were married I would be in the job search process and would have time to train a new pup. This pup would also be there to keep me company during the nights {G} would be gone. Little did I know that this pup would save my sanity and offer me a friendship that I would so desperately need.

When {G} and I were deciding on breeds he had brought up that he was interested in a Corgi. Quite honestly, I had to Google the breed. I had no clue what a Corgi looked like let alone their behavioral characteristics. At first sight I thought.. okay they are cute but I wanted a BIG dog... a lab or a golden retriever. My family had medium dogs growing up and {G}'s had large dogs. We both wanted the opposite.

Around the beginning of July {G} decided to look into a Corgi Breeder 4 hours from the house in South Dakota..... he was JUST looking. I still wasn't sold on getting a Corgi but there was no harm in shopping around. After visiting the breeder and meeting the new pups {G} sent me a photo of the one he wanted.

The photo of him was all I needed. That's our pup... I can't wait to meet him!
The pups were too young and weren't weened yet so {G} gave the breeder the deposit and also asked if he could pay an additional fee for them to keep him until after our wedding. We were getting married back east so we didn't want {G} to bring him home only to have to put him in a kennel a week later.

The weekend after we married and move me to our new home in South Dakota we made arrangements with the breeder to meet halfway to pick up our new 7 week old puppy.

We met at a gas station and from the moment I saw him my heart was full. The breeder handed him to me while {G} signed the paper work. They spoke to us about how he was unique and how we would love having him join our new family.

We drove the two hours with our new pup sitting in my lap. All of the excitement knocked him out and he slept most of the way. As soon as we hit the driveway we put him in the yard to do his business and then decided to see if he would respond to us. I would hold him and {G} would call him from a few feet away, "Winston, come here Winston." {G} had picked out the name, he thought such a "regal" dog should carry such a name. What a goof.

Just like that our new pup came charging with his tiny puppy legs full force into {G}'s arms.
Winston... like he already knew that it was his name.
